Why Prompt Software Updates Matter
Software updates are not just feature releases. They commonly fix security vulnerabilities that attackers can use to steal data, install malware, take over accounts, or move through a network. Delaying an update leaves a device exposed after a flaw has become known—sometimes after attackers have begun targeting it.
For personal devices, enable automatic security updates and reboot promptly when requested. For critical business systems, homelab servers, or devices with specialized hardware, test updates first and maintain a backup or rollback path—but do not let “testing later” become “never patching.”
iPhone and iPad
iPhones can download and install iOS updates automatically overnight when they are charging, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi. support.apple
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Tap Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Automatically Download.
- Turn on Automatically Install.
- Under System Files, turn on Automatically Install.
Also keep App Store applications current:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap App Store.
- Turn on App Updates. support.apple
Android phones and tablets
Android system-update menus vary somewhat by manufacturer and carrier. Google states that most Android system updates and security patches install automatically, but it is still worth checking the setting and installing pending updates. support.google
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap Software update or System update.
- Review the available options and enable automatic downloading or installation if your device provides that setting.
- Install any update already shown as available.
Enable automatic app updates separately:
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap the profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Network preferences.
- Tap Auto-update apps.
- Select Update over Wi-Fi only for a good default balance of reliability and mobile-data use. support.google
macOS
macOS distinguishes between full operating-system upgrades and smaller security, system-data, and application updates. For most people, the most important settings are automatic downloads plus automatic installation of security-related system updates. Apple recommends enabling downloads and system-data/security updates. support.apple
- Click the Apple menu.
- Open System Settings.
- Click General.
- Click Software Update.
- Click the information button next to Automatic updates.
- Enable Download new updates when available.
- Enable Install macOS updates.
- Enable Install system data files and security updates.
- Click Done.
For App Store applications:
- Open the App Store.
- In the menu bar, choose App Store.
- Choose Settings.
- Enable Automatic Updates. support.apple
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Windows Update automatically downloads and installs updates on Windows 11, including fixes intended to keep the device protected and supported. The important operational step is allowing restarts instead of leaving them pending indefinitely. support.microsoft
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates to apply anything currently pending.
- Select Advanced options.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available if shown.
- Review Active hours so Windows schedules restarts outside normal work time.
- When a restart is required, select a convenient time or restart promptly.
If the device is managed by an employer, school, or IT administrator, update settings may be controlled by organizational policy.
Linux
“Linux” is not one operating system, so the exact process depends on the distribution. A sound general approach is to enable automatic security updates, not necessarily automatic upgrades of every package. Security-only updates reduce exposure while limiting the chance that a routine update changes application behavior unexpectedly.
Ubuntu and Debian
Ubuntu uses the unattended-upgrades package to apply security updates automatically; Ubuntu documents that it is generally installed by default and normally runs daily. ubuntu
To enable or confirm it from a terminal:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install unattended-upgrades
sudo dpkg-reconfigure --priority=low unattended-upgrades
When asked whether to automatically download and install stable updates, choose Yes. Then check status:
systemctl status unattended-upgrades
For desktop Ubuntu, an alternative is:
- Open Software & Updates.
- Select the Updates tab.
- Set When there are security updates to Download and install automatically.
- Close the window and authenticate if prompted.
Other distributions
- Fedora: use GNOME Software’s automatic-update setting for desktops, or configure
dnf-automaticfor servers. - RHEL, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux: configure
dnf-automatic, usually with security-only updates and scheduled maintenance windows. - Arch Linux: automatic unattended upgrades are generally discouraged because updates may require manual intervention; subscribe to distribution announcements, update regularly, and maintain tested backups.
For a self-hosted server, automatic security patching should be paired with monitoring, backups, and a planned reboot policy. Kernel, OpenSSL, SSH, or hypervisor-related updates may require a restart before the fix actually protects the system.
A sensible update policy
- Enable automatic updates on personal phones, laptops, and desktops.
- Apply critical security fixes immediately when vendors identify active exploitation.
- Keep devices connected to power and Wi-Fi often enough for updates to complete.
- Enable automatic app updates as well as operating-system updates.
- Back up important data before major OS upgrades.
- For servers and homelabs, use a maintenance window, snapshots or backups, health monitoring, and a documented rollback process.
- Remove or replace devices that no longer receive security updates.
The goal is not blindly installing everything at once; it is ensuring that known security flaws do not remain open longer than necessary. Which of your devices would be most disruptive if it needed an unexpected restart, and how could you schedule its updates around that?
